International Driving Permit for Dubai Car Rental: What You Need and How VIPRent Handles It

An IDP is a legal requirement for driving in Dubai, and it is one short application at home before you fly. Send it to VIPRent on WhatsApp when you enquire and we will confirm it with you. If yours has not arrived, a chauffeur-driven car needs no permit from you at all.

An international driving permit (IDP) is a legal requirement for a visiting driver in Dubai and the UAE, not an optional extra: you must hold one alongside your home license to drive here. It is also one short application at home, with no driving test and often same-day issue. Send yours to VIPRent on WhatsApp when you enquire and we will confirm it with you. Here is what to get before you fly, and what we do if you land without it.

What Is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

An international driving permit is an official travel document that translates your home country driving license into ten languages recognized by UAE law enforcement and rental companies. It is not a standalone license: it must be carried alongside your original national driving license at all times, at rental handovers and at police checkpoints alike.

The IDP is governed by the 1926 United Nations Convention on Motor Traffic and acts as proof that you hold a valid home license. Non-resident drivers in Dubai are required to present both documents when renting and to carry both whenever they drive. That is the whole requirement, and VIPRent goes through it with you on WhatsApp when you enquire.

How to Obtain an IDP Before Traveling to Dubai

Step 1: Apply in Your Home Country

The permit must be issued in the country that holds your license, before you travel, so give yourself 2 to 3 weeks. The issuing authority depends on where you hold a valid driving license:

  • United States: AAA or American Automobile Association
  • United Kingdom: DVLA or Post Office
  • Canada: Provincial motor vehicle office
  • Australia: State or territory motor registry
  • Europe: Local ministry of transport or automobile club

Check your country's official website for the exact agency, or message us and we will point you to it.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Most countries require:

  • Your current valid driving license
  • Completed application form, usually downloadable online
  • Passport or national ID copy
  • Passport-sized photograph (4x6 cm, color)
  • An application fee set by the issuing authority

No driving test is involved, and the permit is issued immediately or within 1 to 5 business days depending on the authority. Send us a photo of it on WhatsApp and we will confirm it with you.

Step 3: Carry Both Documents

Your IDP is valid for one or three years. Keep a digital copy on your phone, but pack both originals and keep them on you whenever you drive: officials and rental partners work from originals, and the digital copy alone is not enough at a checkpoint. Expect our driver to see them at handover, wherever in Dubai you want the car delivered, whether that is your hotel, your residence or the airport.

What We Check on Your Documents

Your Home License Must Be Current

The IDP translates a valid home license, so a lapsed home license is not accepted here even when the permit itself is still in date.

How it is handled: check the expiry date a month before you fly and renew it if it expires during your trip. Send it over and we will confirm it with you when you enquire.

IDP Validity Periods and Older Permits

A three-year permit stays valid for its full term. Some rental counters in Dubai may refuse it if your home license is older than three years, and sending your documents to VIPRent when you enquire is how you find that out before you fly rather than at handover.

How it is handled: request a fresh IDP when you renew your license, or carry a certified copy of the license from the issuing authority. Send both to VIPRent and we will confirm the pairing with you.

Travel With the Original Home License

The permit is only valid when it is presented with the original home license, in the same name and with the same photograph. Rental agents will not accept an IDP on its own.

How it is handled: pack the two together, and replace a damaged license before departure. Dubai residents on a foreign license have a different route, covered in our guide to renting without a local license.

Apply Through a Recognized Authority

The UAE recognizes only IDPs issued under the 1926 United Nations Convention, which means permits from government motor vehicle offices and official automobile clubs. Permits sold by non-official agencies, online services or travel agents are not legal in Dubai and will not be accepted, however official the document looks.

How it is handled: apply through your country's official channel, never a third-party website. Send us the link before you pay if you are unsure which one that is.

Additional Documents for Luxury Car Rental in Dubai

Alongside your IDP and home license, a luxury or exotic rental from the VIPRent fleet also requires:

  • Passport copy, information page
  • A payment method for the rental itself
  • Hotel address or Dubai contact details
  • Return flight ticket or proof of residency

Requirements vary between rental companies, so confirm the list with your rental partner in advance. Message us and we will tell you what we need for the car you have in mind. At VIPRent the minimum age is 18 with no young-driver surcharge, you need to have held your license for at least 1 year, insurance is included, and most cars need no security deposit. Salik road tolls are paid by the renter and billed at cost, as our Salik toll guide explains. Delivery and collection anywhere in Dubai, including the airport, are free.

Arriving Without an IDP: Chauffeur-Driven Cars

An IDP has to be applied for at home before you travel, so landing without one rules out self-drive for this trip. It does not rule out the car. A chauffeur-driven car needs no permit from you at all, because the professional driver holds the license. You get the same luxury vehicle, delivered free anywhere in Dubai, with someone else handling the traffic and the parking.

Guests book chauffeur-driven cars for a single evening, a wedding, or a whole stay. Tell us your dates on WhatsApp or Telegram at any hour and a person will answer, with live pricing on each model's page.

Key Takeaways

  • An IDP is mandatory for a visiting driver in Dubai: apply in your home country 2 to 3 weeks before you travel, with no test involved and often same-day issue.
  • Carry the original home license with the permit at all times; neither document is valid here without the other.
  • Apply through your official government channel or automobile club, because permits from third-party online agencies are not legal in the UAE.
  • Send your documents to VIPRent when you enquire and we will confirm them with you, then show the originals to our driver at handover.
  • No permit in hand is no obstacle: a chauffeur-driven car needs none from you.
  • Age 18 minimum, insurance included, no deposit on most cars, free delivery, WhatsApp and Telegram answered by a person 24/7.
